deal no.1

First deal is 26 HCP Grand Slam and is from our early days. We were competing in Gujarat Open Pairs Selection Trial for National at Rajpath Club Ahmedabad about 15 years back. Nobody in the house had bid grand Slam. Majority South Opened weak 2S and ended in 4S. Those south players who did not open 2S, few were able to reach LS in H or S.

P 3 image (8) P 3 image (9)
P 4NT(10) P 5 image (11)
P 5NT(12) P 6 image (13)
P 7 image (14)

Bidding explanations:

1) 1 image 11-15 pts & min. 5 cards image suit(1 pt added for dist .being 6 cards suit).
2) 1NT 1st relay for strength.
3) 2 image 11-13 pts.(any other bid will show 14-15).
4) 2 image 2nd relay for Dist.
5) 2 image 6 cards image suit & no other 4 cards suit.
6) 2NT 3rd relay for singleton (after 6 cards suit).
7) 3 image Club singleton(which means H & D are 3-3 so tentatively contract will be in H suit).
8) 3 image 4th Relay for what is singleton? honour or not?
9) 3 image No honour (good news. Balance pts. in other suits).
10) 4NT RKC for spade (6 cards suit, to find out S-Q for Dia. discards).
11) 5 image Two key cards (i.e. image - A & image - A, without image - Q)
12) 5NT King asking.
13) 6 image No King.
14) 7 image Spade length to take care of Dia. losers after one/two ruffs as the case may be.

Beauty of the above deal is that trump suit and final contract level is known to other three players at Grand Slam level only.

75% of the time, normally relayer becomes declarer and opener becomes dummy thus re-layer's hand remains unknown till end and it becomes more difficult for the opponents to interfere in the bidding or to find correct defence.

deal no.2

Deal no.25 of 2nd session of elimination round of Board-a-match of 44th winter national tournament played at Ludhiana on 29.11.2002 ( 26 pts. Grand Slam ).

Bidding explanations:

1) 1 image 11-15 pts & 5 cards image suit.
2) Dbl. 1st relay for strength.
3) 4 image Jump shows original suit 6 cards ( image ) & second suit 5 cards ( image )
Note: With H void (opponent's suit), he upgrades his hand from 11-13 to 14-15.
4) 4 image 2nd relay asking for remaining two cards.
5) 4 image Bid suit void (if it is 6-5-1-1, then reply will be 4NT).
6) 4NT RKC in second suit.
7) 5 image Two key cards (i.e. image - A & image - K).
8) 7 image Spade length to take care of Dia. losers.

As declarer is North, it is unbeatable on any lead.

Beauty of this deal was that in spite of this, we got Zero. Our counterpart in East was Sh Parimal Vahalia of Ahmedabad who overcalled Heart at two level but had doubled 4image cue bid of North (telling partner not to lead image) and finally had also doubled final bid of 7image by south (lightener dbl bid, asking for spade lead) which was redoubled. West could not understand East's both Doubles (cue bid as well as lightener dbl bid) and led image.

deal no.3

I got this deal recently in beginning of March 2010. This deal is a classic example of flexibility of this system i.e. you can stop in part game, game, L.S. or G.S. depending upon the replies you get from opener on your relays.

Explanation of Bidding and thought process of responder:

Bid Meaning Thought process of responder
1) 1 image 11 - 15 & 5 cards image suit -
2) 2NT 2nd relay for singleton. Now 4 image game is assured. So, on the way to 4 image let me find out whether has he got any singleton? If it is image , then my hand improves further. Hence 2nd relay for singleton.
3) 3 image Club Singleton If no singleton then reply will be 3NT.
4) 3 image 3rd relay for What is singleton. Not encouraging news but still let me find out what singleton as I am still below 4image level.
5) 4 image Club A (3 image no honour, 3 image image Q, 3NT image K & 4 image image A).
6) 4NT RKC for image trump (with only 6 card suit shown then, it is trump). With image - A, hand improved lot. L.S. appears to be probable. Let me now find out whether image - A, image - A & trump Q is with opener or not by RKC.
7) 5 image Two key cards with trump Q (image - A & image - A & image - Q. image - A has been excluded as it has been shown earlier by 4 image bid of opener)
8) 7 image Great news Opener's 14 pt has been counted & all are working. I will have 6 tricks of image, two ruff in Dummy, one trick each in image - A & image - A & min three trick in Club i.e. min. 13 tricks and so Grand slam. (14 tricks if image J, 4 carded and 15 trick if image J tripleton). So Simple!

Beauty of this deal is that it progresses from part game to game & then again game, then little slam and finally to grand slam depending upon five replies of opener, step by step.

deal no.4

I came across this deal during local tournament on 25/5/2009.(26 pts L-S, Importance of Prime points & splinter bid showing singleton)

P 4NT(3) P 5 image (4)
P 5NT(5) P 6 image (6)

Opening lead image J

Bidding explanations:

1) 1 image 11-15 pts & 5 cards image suit.
2) 3 image Splinter in image showing singleton (4 image will show void)Note : Passed hand's splinter bid shows 10 pts. & image singleton. Otherwise bid will be 3S,so why not splinter. If opener has 11pts. he will pass & with higher pts. he will bid 4S on 3S response.
3) 4NT RKC in image (as he is having higher side points & all prime points)
4) 5 image Two key cards (i.e. image - A & K)
5) 5NT King asking
6) 6 image 1 king either image or image
7) 6 image 1 loser either in image or image depending upon which king.

Bidding is simple. In view of quick entries in North Hand (Prime Points), declarer always get three image ruffs in dummy, even on a best lead of trump. Contract will make even on 0-4 trump distribution.

Beauty of this deal is that it shows the flexibility of this system. This allows you to bid part-game/game/slam depending upon the locations of opener's high card points, after splinter bid by responder. If opener had K, J in image, and other suits points of K, Q or J he, will bid 3 image. If opener has points in others Suits in A, K etc. with some wasted values in image, then he will stop in game. And as in this case, if he had prime points & no wasted values in image, he can explore for slam & bid it.

Bidding explanations:

2) 4 image Splinter in image showing void (3 image would show singleton) Note:- Passed hand's splinter bid shows 10 pts. & image singleton. Distribution pts. for additional 2 trumps and club wide are added. In any case with 6 cards trump support you will bid 4S so on the way why not show club void.
3) 4NT RKC in image, conveying no wasted values in image.
4) 5 image One key card (i.e. image - A)
5) 5NT King asking
6) 6 image One king (i.e image - K or image - K)
7) 7 image If image - K then no loser in image. If image - K, then it will serve for image discard.

10) 5NT King asking
11) 6 image No King
12) 7 image image length to take care of some of image & image losers & remaining losers will be ruffed because opener has shown 6 & 4 cards of image & image so remaining 3 cards will be image & image (3-0 or 2-1 or 1-2dist)

P 2 image(3) P 3 image (4)
P 4 image(5) P 4NT(6)
P 5 image (7) P 5NT(8)
P 6 image (9) P 7 image (10)

Bidding explanations:

1) 1 image 16+ pts, any dist. (Note: Though I had 15 points, I did not open 1NT because of major singleton. Hence I lied and opened 1C as no wasted value in Singleton. With 14 pts I would open 1D & on Responder's Relay of 1H, I will jump to 2NT to show 4-4-4-1 dist. showing 14-15 pts.)
2) 1 image 12 + pts., any dist.
3) 2 image 16-18 & min 5 cards suit (in view singleton Major, I did not bid NT. I lied again in D showing 5 cards suit instead of actual 4 cards).
4) 3 image Min. 5 cards image suit.
5) 4 image Splinter in S (singleton) (Min. 4 cards support with one honour in trump).
6) 4NT RKC in image (showing no wasted value in image suit).
7) 5 image Two key cards i.e. image - A & image - K
8) 5NT King asking
9) 6 image One king (i.e. image - K)
10) 7 image As opener has shown only 10 pts so far (image - A, image - K & image - K) & no pts. in image, hence he has to have balance pts in queens & jacks of image & image. Thus you have min. 5 tricks in image, two ruffs in Dummy, 3 tricks each in image & image, totaling min. 13 tricks.

3) 2 image Natural, showing 16-18 pts & min. 5 cards image suit
4) 2 image Natural, showing min. 5 cards image suit.
5) 4 image Splinter in image i.e. min. 4 cards with one honour in image and image Singleton.
6) 4NT RKC in image showing no wasted value in image (note :- I did not show singleton in image because it may create confusion in view of partner's suit. He may take it as image support also)
7) 5 image 0 or 3 keycards i.e. image - A, image - A & image - K in view of 1C opening.
8) 5 image Trump Q asking bid
9) 5 image Yes, I have (Step II reply).
10) 5NT King Asking
11) 6 image One King, either image - K or image - K
12) 6 image In case of image - K (5 trump tricks, 3 ruffs, 2 in image & 1 each in image & image)
13) 7 image In case of image - K (5 trump tricks, 3 ruffs, 3 in image & 1 each in image & image)

Note: With regular partnership, there is simple convention called "improved king asking Bid" (see Slam bidding (5)(B) on page 22) where you show lowest king first (instead of no. of Kings). If you play this convention, then you will know that it is image - K (responder will bid 6 image; showing image - K), now you can bid confidently 7 image (instead of 6 image).
